Welsh councils have the highest average recycling rate in the UK, according to new figures.
The latest statistics from the Welsh Government show councils in Wales recycled 56% of household waste in 2014/15, with seven councils hitting the 58% target a year early.
Spokesperson for the environment at the Welsh Local Government Association, Cllr Andrew Morgan, said: ‘Throughout Wales new schemes are being put in place as our recycling and wider waste management services continue to evolve to meet new Welsh Government targets, and this constant innovation by our local councils has seen the recycling rate for Wales rise from just 10% in 2005 to 56% in 2014/15.
‘This is an extraordinary achievement not just by local councils in developing new services, but on the part of our local communities who are engaging, changing their habits and adapting to new ways of managing their household waste.’
However, the WLGA did warn that improving recycling rates would become more challenging in the future.
