The national health and safety regulator has taken over the investigation into how a 10-year-old girl was killed by a mudslide during a school trip.

Leah Harrison, a pupil at Hartlepool Borough Council-run Mount Pleasant Primary School in Darlington, was on a school trip at Carlton Adventure when the tragedy occurred in May.

A statement at the time said the council was ‘utterly devastated and heartbroken’ following the tragedy.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: ‘After working closely with North Yorkshire Police we are now leading the investigation into the death of ten-year-old Leah Harrison on 22 May 2024.’

Why age alone shouldn’t define local government leadership
