Waste: SITA aims to boost Northumberland recycling to 45%

Northumberland County Council has agreed a 28-year contract aimed at recycling almost half the authority’s waste.
The council’s executive agreed this week to the waste management private-finance initiative, which aims to see more than 45% of Northumberland’s household waste being recycled. SITA UK has been chosen as the contractor for the deal, due to be officially signed in December, which is worth £40.8M.
Paul Jones, the county council’s head of waste management, said: ‘This is an affordable and sustainable strategy to handle Northumberland’s waste needs and will make Northumberland one of the greenest counties in the UK.’
The council will now continue the process of securing land and submitting planning permission for sites for new recycling plants.
It will also seek final approval from the Government before entering the new agreement, which should become operational in 2007.
