A London borough council has announced plans to ban riders leaving e-bikes on pavements in busy town centres.

Wandsworth Council said the ban would come into force once it had installed 111 new e-bike parking bays in about a month's time.

The bays in Clapham Junction, Tooting Broadway, Tooting Bec, Wandsworth Town, Balham and Putney will encourage more ‘considerate’ parking, the local authority said.

Measures put in place by e-bike operators, such as an end of ride photo to review parking, will help enforce the ban.

‘Free-floating’ parking will still be allowed in quieter areas.

Head of transport strategy David Tidley said the use of e-bikes had brought challenges for residents, with some riders abandoning bikes ‘without any thought for pedestrians and local communities’.

However, he said the council supported the transport mode as a ‘clean and sustainable way of getting around’ that helped improve local air quality.

Wandsworth plans to build more e-bike parking bays later this year.
