Voting was suspended yesterday in the Southampton ward of Coxford after the death of the local candidate, the city council has confirmed.

Conservative councillor Graham Galton, who previously served Millbrook ward, died on Thursday morning.

Cllr Daniel Fitzhenry, leader of the Conservative Group on Southampton City Council said: 'We are deeply, deeply saddened by Graham’s sudden death this morning.

'Graham was a true gentleman, an incredibly kind, warm and friendly man, who many people got on with and he loved to take the time to talk with anyone.'

Conservative Party chairman Greg Hands commented: ‘Am so sorry to hear of the death of our Councillor Graham Galton. My thoughts and condolences - and those of the whole Party - are with his family and friends.’

A new poll will be held within 35 working days.
