Transport: Crossrail has Whitehall fans

The Crossrail scheme was among several transport innovation fund bids the Department for Transport has decided to take forward for business case development and further appraisal. Transport secretary, Douglas Alexander, announced this week: ‘We are keeping open the possibility of a contribution to the costs of taking forward Crossrail, although a decision will not be taken until after the conclusion of Sir Michael Lyons’ review of local government finances.’ Schemes which improved the capacity and resilience of national freight distribution networks, or made more of existing capacity, were prioritised. Traffic management schemes for Birmingham and Leeds/Bradford, an upgrade of the A14, and a string of rail upgrades are included. London First applauded the Government’s setting aside of funding for Crossrail’s construction. Business cases are due to be completed by the end of July.
