Transport: Bosses back tram blueprint

Transport authority bosses in the West Midlands have approved a £430M blueprint for the expansion of the region’s tram network.
The final plans for two new Midland Metro lines through Birmingham city centre, and from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill, are being submitted to the Government.
Passenger transport authority, Centro, wants the Department for Transport to fund three-quarters of the cost. PTA chairman, Gary Clarke, said the expansion would boost accessibility and cut congestion. The new services could be running by 2012.
