The new £160M national traffic control centre would give the ‘fullest real-time picture ever’ of conditions across the motorway network, transport secretary Alistair Darling said last week.
The new centre, near the M5 at Quinton, Birmingham, collects information on 7,300km of England’s strategic road network from 3,750 road sensors and 700 CCTV cameras, and from reports from traffic officers, police forces, and local councils.
Information will be made available through traffic bulletins, information points, its website and 24-hour automated telephone service.
