Tories launch speedy action

A number of Tory councils have defied the Conservatives Party’s stance on high-speed rail by joining bipartisan talks on the London to Birmingham route.

Transport secretary, Lord Adonis, has held talks with the leaders of Birmingham and Leeds City Councils, Solihull MBC and Hammersmith and Fulham LBC. He claims the local authorities are desperate for the high-speed rail link to go ahead.
However, shadow transport secretary, Theresa Villiers, has vowed to reserve her right in government to scrap the plans drawn up by High Speed 2, and re-route the line.
