Tories claim 'Garden Tax' could affect 10 million homeowners

Labour’s proposed Property and Garden Tax could increase the average council tax bill by 224%, the Conservatives have warned.

The Tories said the Land Value Tax – which was outlined in Corbyn’s manifesto – could see council tax bills rise to up to £3,837 from an average of £1,185.

Communities minister Mr Percy said: ‘Either you are whacked with massive bills in places where property is dearer – or you’ll suffer a hike for living in a part of the country where there is more space for bigger gardens.’

Labour manifesto contains the proposal to replace council tax with a new Land Value Tax, although there was little detail about how the policy would work.
