‘Time to act now’

Councils should act now on the recommendations of the Councillors Commission, rather than waiting for the government to respond, the chair of the commission has said.
Dame Jane Roberts told a fringe event at the Labour Party Spring conference in Birmingham, ‘Don’t wait for the Government to respond. If you really want to change, local authorities and political parties can do this.’ Some things, she added, were even down to individuals.
She denied the duty to promote local government was unnecessary. She said: ‘We tried not to be too prescriptive, but recommendation one [the duty] was an exception.’
