Three candidates enter race to head LGA Labour Group

Three councillors have stepped forward to replace Sir Jeremy Beecham as head of the Local Government Association Labour Group.

Nominations closed at midday yesterday, with nominations for:

  • Cllr Peter Box (Wakefield City Council)
  • Cllr John Merry (Salford MBC)
  • Cllr David Sparks (Dudley MBC)

The Labour Group will send out ballot forms on Monday 18 January and the ballot will close on 26 February. The new leader will be announced at the Labour group spring conference, and the new leader will take over after the LGA conference in July.

There will be four hustings meetings:

  • Gateshead – Friday 8 January – 17.15-18.00, the Sage Gateshead
  • Birmingham – Monday 11 January – 19.30-21.00, Birmingham Council House (NOT the Town Hall as earlier announced)
  • London – Thursday 14 January – 12.00-14.00, Local Government House
  • Manchester – Tuesday 19 January – 16.00-18.00, Manchester Town Hall

The returning officer for the election will be Jo Miller, Deputy Chief Executive of the LGA.
