Sweet success for factory

The former Birds Custard factory in Digbeth is to build on its success in transforming itself into Birmingham’s most vibrant arts and leisure  centre.
Since 1990 the once derelict factory has been developed into the city’s leading centre for creative talent by entrepreneur Bennie Gray.
The factory which dates back to the late 19th century, is now home to more than 300 companies employing more than 700 people and including a complex of bars, nightclubs, restaurants and retail shops. Advantage West Midlands will invest £6.4 million through the East Birmingham North Solihull Regeneration Zone towards a £20 million modernisation of two buildings which are part of the original Custard Factory complex but which have yet to be redeveloped.
These include the iconic Devonshire House in Digbeth High Street, the offices of Sir Alfred Bird, and Fazeley Studios in Follodgate Street.
Work on the conversion will start this month  and is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Investment will create
a further 110 units at the Custard Factory, creating more than 330 new jobs and safeguarding a further 175 jobs.
