Surrey schools to get longer half terms

Starting in October 2026, council-maintained schools in Surrey will have a two-week half term and a shorter summer break.

Surrey County Council announced the change after a survey found 60% of schools that responded were in favour of a two-week autumn half term.

Just under a third (30%) of schools were against and a further 10% were undecided.

Jonathan Hulley, Surrey CC cabinet member for Children, Families and Lifelong Learning, said: ‘While the majority of feedback we have received supports this change, we appreciate that this is not the preferred option for some families, which is why we are allowing plenty of time to plan for the new arrangements.’

He added: ‘This decision has been shared with the diverse range of schools and education settings in Surrey, and we hope that the feedback of families and education staff will encourage them to also set term dates which are consistent.’
