Big savings and faster road improvements are getting the green light at Surrey, where the county council is set to introduce ‘Google Street View style’ software.
Annual savings generated by the technology could reach £100,000 a year while freeing up thousands of manpower hours for the highways teams.
The Horizons software provided by Yotta will provide the latest zoomable street-level photographs of the county’s roads, overlaid by constantly-updated information about everything from the state of the road surface to the date when the grass verge was last cut.
It will allow Surrey’s highways teams to set priorities quickly and accurately without the need for as many site visits.
‘This year we ploughed £3m saved on our roads budget back into doing repairs, and this software means we’ll continue to give value for money while improving Surrey’s roads,’ said John Furey, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for highways.
The software is due to be introduced this autumn.
