Surrey has China in its sights

Surrey CC has sealed a deal with one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, in a bid to boost business.

Surrey has signed an agreement with Zibo City, in China, to develop new business, cultural and sporting links.

With all eyes on the new Expo unveiled in Shanghi this week, focus has returned again to how China will help drive the global economic recovery.

Local government in the UK has been a key driver in strengthening ties with China. Among them is Birmingham, which has exploited its roots in the automotive industry to increase trade.

Surrey’s deputy leader, Cllr David Hodge, signed the agreement with Zibo’s chairman of city congress, Dr Liu Huiyan, during a recent visit by officials to the UK. ‘Zibo City is recognised as one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, and Surrey is a powerhouse of the British economy,’ said Mr Hodge. ‘We look forward to working with our Chinese friends to develop successful business opportunities to increase the prosperity of both Surrey and Zibo City.’
