Suffolk’s district and borough council leaders have joined forces to oppose plans published by Suffolk County Council for a single unitary authority.
The county council has set out proposals for a single unitary authority to replace the six councils currently operating in Suffolk.
It argues this would ‘reduce duplication, lower administrative costs and ensure a more coordinated and cost-effective approach to delivering essential services.’
However, the county’s district and borough council leaders oppose this plan, arguing it would be too large to work effectively and too remote for local residents to be heard.
Their proposal calls for the creation of multiple unitary authorities for Suffolk.
‘Our collective solution is the best way to deliver services, value for money and make sure the “local” stays in local government for Suffolk,’ commented Cllr Cliff Waterman, leader for West Suffolk Council.
