Streetlighting: Leeds out in front with UK’s biggest-ever PFI contract
SEC Lighting Services will replace 80% of the city’s streetlights, illuminated signs and bollards with new stock within the first five years – at a cost of £100M - using bulbs which are 30% more efficient than traditional white lights, while also enhancing night-time visibility.
‘Our principal aim in designing the streetlighting programme for Leeds was to find an environmentally-friendly, as well as an energy-efficient solution,’ said Mike Williams, SEC regional director.
PFI funding is also being used by Dorset County Council and Redcar and Cleveland Council to improve streetlighting. Dorset has signed a PFI contract with EDF Energy worth £31.6M, and Redcar and Cleveland Council has signed a £46M PFI deal with David Webster Lighting to replace existing columns.
