Space age technology to identify damaged trees

Space age technology is being used in Exeter to show the council the exact location and details for fallen or damaged trees.

The council has secured funding from the UK Space Agency to develop the ground-breaking tree management system. Using satellite positioning, navigation and timing technology, the hand-held devices will help identify affected trees and input relevant information onto the system.

Cllr Ollie Pearson, lead councillor for enabling services at Exeter, said: ‘It's a privilege to be at the cutting edge of new technology and trialling an application that will not only save time and money for the council but will also hopefully enable residents to be able to report trees when they come down or are damaged.’

The council is responsible for around 8,000 trees and, if successful, the technology will be expanded so members of the public can use it on mobile devices.
