Skills: New skills college for Birmingham

A multimillion-pound engineering academy is planned for Birmingham, in a bid to fill the skills gap.

The academy, which will be the first university-led technology college in the country, is being created through a partnership between Birmingham City Council and Aston University as lead sponsor.

It will cater for 600 pupils, with an intended opening date of September 2012. Known as the Aston University Engineering Academy, it will be used as a role model for the rest of the country. A new trust, led by former Conservative education secretary, Kenneth Baker, and education specialist, Lord Dearing, has been set up to promote the new concept.

The academy will also play a crucial role in delivering vocational skills under the Government’s new 14 to 19 diplomas.
