The Government has claimed it is scrapping its ‘top-down approach’ on recycling while still ensuring ‘all homes in England recycle the same materials’.

Whitehall officials had insisted they were continuing to push ahead with waste consistency plans in July, with local government sources suggesting the Government was planning for six or seven separate collections.

But, in a screeching U-turn, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has now insisted a ‘requirement to recycle with seven bins will not happen’ under its new Simpler Recycling policy.
