Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram was assigned 24-hour police security after he received threats during the Covid pandemic, he revealed today.
He told the Covid Inquiry the threats were received after the region was placed into tier three restrictions – the most severe outside a lockdown.
Mayor Rotheram said the combined authority had the 'rug pulled from under our feet’ over the introduction of the measures in October 2020.
As negotiations with the Government over financial support were nearing completion, Mayor Rotheram said he read in a national newspaper ‘it was a fait accompli and we were going into tier three whether we liked it or not’.
He added: ‘We were concerned about the messaging to the people of Liverpool City Region.
