The Queen’s Birthday Honours list has paid tribute to local authority personnel from Glasgow City Council who played an important role in delivering COP26.

The council’s chief executive Annemarie O’Donnell, who was chair of the COP26 programme board, has been awarded an OBE for services to local government.

Commenting on the honour, Ms O’Donnell said: ‘I think it is undeniable that, when somebody in a role like mine receives an honour, it reflects the work and the dedication of thousands of people.

‘I’m very proud to play my part for my city and its communities; but I’m one of many more in schools, in social care and in depots, venues and offices all over the city.’

Colin Best Edgar and Denise Hamilton – respectively senior responsible officer, COP26 and head, city services and COP26, Glasgow City Council – were also recognised.

Suzanne Kathryn Wylie, lately chief executive, Belfast City Council, was also awarded an OBE for services to local government in Northern Ireland.

The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) has congratulated its leader, Cllr Andrew Morgan, and the presiding officer, Cllr Huw David, who have both been recognised with an OBE in this year’s Queen Birthday Honours.

Chris Llewelyn, chief executive of WLGA said: ‘Local government is full of dedicated public servants, and we are delighted to see Cllr Andrew Morgan and Cllr Huw David being recognised for their tireless work.’

Peter Martin Fahy, director of adult social care and support, Coventry City Council was awarded and OBE for services to local government and vulnerable people, and David Trevor Molyneux, leader of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, was recognised for his services to local government and to the community in Wigan.

Chief executive of Together for Children and Director of Children’s Services in Sunderland, Jill Colbert, has also been named in Honours List. She was awarded an OBE after Sunderland children’s services was transformed from Inadequate to Outstanding in a national first last year.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: ‘This historic Platinum Jubilee is not only a celebration of the monarch but of the qualities she possesses. The honours she confers this week reflect many of those qualities that have been invaluable from all different walks of life and to communities across the UK.

‘I pay tribute to all of this year’s winners. Their stories of courage and compassion are an inspiration to us all.’
