Oxford City Council has approved plans to develop 294 affordable homes, along with new retail spaces and community facilities.
Working with housing association Peabody, the council will develop the homes across two sites in Blackbird Leys. All the homes will be for social or affordable rent or shared ownership.
The plans also involve new green spaces, shops, a community centre, and improved roads with a segregated cycle route.
Cllr Linda Smith, cabinet member for housing, said the plans were part of the council’s ‘longstanding ambition to breathe renewed life into Blackbird Leys.’
The development will take place in phases, with work on the first new homes and shops set to begin later this year, and a second phase of homebuilding expected to get underway in 2025.
Simon Barry, managing director of development at Peabody, said: ‘Every home at Blackbird Leys will be affordable, helping to tackle Oxford’s housing shortage, and we’re proud to be enhancing green spaces, delivering new active travel routes and creating a modern civic heart for this community.’
