Nottingham summit will highlight sustainability issues
The two day summit on Wednesday and Thursday, 27 and 28 June will have a central theme of sustainability with emphasis to be placed on sustainability issues for urban centres.
The eight strong core cities group of – Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield – will also be examining a range of themes from the knowledge economy, transport and skills to international city competitiveness and private sector partnerships.
Around 500 delegates are expected to attend the summit including senior ministers, representatives from the regional development agencies, local authorities, chambers of commerce, universities and private and voluntary sector organisations.
Speaking at the Core Cities Summit in Bristol last year Ms Kelly praised the economic and social revival of England's major cities since 1997. However, Ms Kelly, said there was still more to do to close the gap with its European competitors.
She singled out Nottingham for special mention and said: “We must be ambitious and visionary. Nottingham has the opportunity not only to become an engine of growth for its region – a Valencia of the East Midlands, but also to compete on the international stage.”
