Northants prepares for minimum basic services

Northamptonshire CC has painted a bleak picture of basic future services in a bid to get its ‘truly perilous’ finances back under control.

The cash-strapped council will meet tonight in an extraordinary council meeting after its second Section 114 notice was served last week.

In an effort to plug the £60m-70m cash shortfall, the council will debate switching to a ‘core offer’ which offers little more than basic statutory services and set out a hierarchy to direct its resources.

In a report to the council, it says: ‘This is the best service offer we are likely to be able to afford. It aims to fulfil our duties and offers support to those most in need only.

‘The core offer will be measured against the resources available to the authority.’
