A sustainability programme has been launched by the Local Government Association (LGA) to help councils reach carbon reduction targets.

It includes masterclasses and workshops, as well as a greenhouse gas accounting tool and waste emissions calculator.

It will also involve networks including an online sustainability hub, a monthly sustainability bulletin and an officer ‘communities of practice’ network.

‘Only councils can lead targeted local climate action in our villages, towns and cities’, LGA innovation and improvement board chair Cllr Abi Brown said.

Part of the LGA’s sector support offer, the two-year programme was created in partnership with the Crown Commercial Service (CCS), which also provided £700,000.

CCS national account manager for local communities and housing Eddie Gibson said: ‘Councils are a vital part of moving their communities towards net zero – this programme will enable knowledge-sharing and spread good practice across the sector, placing sustainable outcomes at the heart of council decision making.’
