New director to help turnaround Rotherham

Rotherham Borough Council has appointed a new director of children’s services following the scandal of historic child sex abuse.

Ian Thomas, who is currently deputy chief executive and strategic director of children’s services at Derbyshire County Council, will officially start his new role in January 2015. However, he will be appointed on an interim basis immediately given the 'urgent’ nature of the situation.

Mr Thomas has 25 years experience in local government and achieved a strong Single Inspection Framework Inspection for Derbyshire by Ofsted earlier this year. Given the urgent nature of the appointment Mr Thomas has been appointed on interim basis.

Cllr Paul Lakin, leader of Rotherham Borough Council, said: ‘Ian’s appointment is great news for the council and great news for children and families in Rotherham. His track record speaks for itself, and we’re delighted that Rotherham will benefit from Ian’s substantial experience and expertise – including his work at a national level.’
