Nearly two thirds of survey respondents across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough were uninformed about local government reorganisation (LGR).

According to this year’s results of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Quality of Life survey, 63% of participants ‘knew nothing’ about reorganisation.

The survey also revealed that 46% of residents surveyed had not heard of LGR before.

The council has since launched an LGR campaign, designed to teach the community more about the process, while inviting residents to share their views on the ‘Option A’ proposal by October 3.

As part of the ‘preferred’ Option A plans, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire would be shared across two new council areas.

In a statement, Cambridgeshire CC suggests that Option A ‘best meets the Government’s criteria’, as well as supporting devolution, catering to both rural and urban areas, and promoting economic growth.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Chief Executive, Dr Stephen Moir said: ‘Almost 3,000 residents and 186 stakeholders contributed to the initial phase of engagement about local government reorganisation.’

He added: ‘We believe that the creation of two well-balanced councils, each supported by one of the geographic county’s two major cities and offering financial resilience and sustainability, will achieve fairer outcomes for all our communities and create more equal, more empowered and more efficient local government for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in the future.’
