Nearly 2,000 green spaces celebrated in Green Flag Awards

From traditional parks to burial sites, a record number of green spaces have been awarded a Green Flag this year.

Green Flags, which show a space has excellent facilities and is maintained to the highest standard, have been given to 1,883 spaces this year across the UK.

This year's winners include university campuses, shopping centres, war memorials, crematoriums and the Thames Barrier Park.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd, said: 'It has been a record-breaking year for Green Flag Awards, and it’s fantastic to see such a diverse range of locations have been recognised.

'We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to experience, and encourage the public to head outdoors, explore their local area and find even more unexpected green spaces they can enjoy.'

Mansfield Council (pictured) were awarded Green Flags for five of its parks and two local nature reserves.
