McDonald’s has assisted in removing litter from city centres in pilot schemes in Birmingham and Manchester.
The company has employed a full-time member of staff to clean-up litter throughout both cities, in areas nearby to their restaurants. It has also provided feedback cards to customers in order to nominate ‘grot spots’ which will then be incorporated into the daily litter collector’s route. The role involves cleaning - at the minimum - a three mile area over a 30 hour week.
To benefit their local communities, the collectors in both cities not only pick-up McDonald’s packaging, but general waste as well.
Paul Andrews, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “It’s good to see McDonald’s is taking its responsibilities seriously by making sure the areas around its restaurants are kept clean, and I’m pleased the company has gone beyond this by extending the scheme across Manchester city centre.”
