Majority of people use car for airport

The Government has probed low carbon transport alternatives for staff and passengers travelling to airports, following concerns about the amount of car use.

The Department for Transport (DfT) set up an investigation last year with the UK’s six largest passenger airports – Manchester, Birmingham and four in London – aimed at producing recommendations which could be applied across the country.

Several core initiatives have now been produced, including better information for passengers on transport options, working with businesses on travel, and holding best practice forums.

A decision on the issue was taken as less than half of passengers travelled to airports by public transport in the past decade. Numbers have risen in recent years, but Manchester still only had 11% in 2009.
