Agencies have declared a major incident after a sinkhole appeared in a Surrey village, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.
The cavity appeared in Godstone on Monday evening (17 February) and had grown to at least 20 metres by Tuesday afternoon, leading to water supplies being cut off.
The area has been cordoned off, with residents of about 30 homes being supported into emergency accommodation by Tandridge District Council, and the road into Godstone from the A25 has been closed.
Local utility firm SES Water is working to restore the water supply to affected homes and has set up a bottled water station.
The incident is being managed by Surrey's local resilience forum, with Surrey County Council as lead agency.
Surrey’s assistant director for safer communities, Carl Bussey, said: ‘The local resilience forum will continue to meet throughout this incident to ensure everything is being done to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible.’
