A group of Labour MPs have called for the abolition of Lancashire’s 15 councils in a bid to simplify local government in the county.
The MPs have written to the Government arguing that Lancashire should be served by three or four local authorities and a mayor.
Oliver Ryan, MP for Burnley, has written a report on the new idea, saying: ‘Our time is now. The new Government has a once-in-a-generation chance to deliver for Lancashire.’
Council leaders in the area have already reached a devolution deal with the Government to create a combined authority. However, the MPs argue the deal is not ‘ambitious enough’.
Council leaders have either rejected the proposals or called for a referendum on the idea. One leader said the proposal was ‘civic vandalism’, according to the BBC.
