London's ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) has led to ‘substantial improvements’ in air quality across the capital, new research reveals.

A report by the Greater London Authority found a 27% reduction in roadside nitrogen dioxide levels since Ulez was introduced in 2019.

The report also found particle emissions (PM 2.5) from vehicle exhausts are 31% lower in outer London in 2024 than they would have been without the ULEZ expansion.

Nearly all (99%) of air quality monitoring sites across London have shown improved air quality since 2019.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, commented: ‘Today’s report shows that ULEZ works, driving down levels of pollution, taking old polluting cars off our roads and bringing cleaner air to millions more Londoners.’

Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell commented: ‘The Clean Air Zone should have been London wide from the start. I'm glad the Mayor listened and Londoners are finally breathing cleaner air.’
