The London borough of Southwark has agreed to scrap controversial ‘golden goodbye’ payments to councillors.

The payments have been controversial since their introduction in 2016 and were opposed by the opposition Liberal Democrat group.

But the Labour-led council has now agreed to scrap the ‘loss of office’ payments.

However, the report also recommended they continue to pay out additional allowances to committee chairs and other position holders.

‘Special responsibility allowances’ will mean committee chairs are paid thousands of pounds per meeting chaired for the next financial year.

The chair of Southwark’s main scrutiny committee will receive £3,003 for each of the eight times the committee meets over the next 12 months.

The additional yearly allowance for deputy cabinet members is set to increase by £6,609 for each of the four position holders.

Southwark Liberal Democrat leader Victor Chamberlain said: ‘The culture of cronyism has grown out of control in Southwark and too many Labour councillors are being rewarded by the taxpayer unnecessarily.’
