Liverpool's communal bin collection points are set for a major overhaul, with Cabinet members due to approve contractors next week to build permanent housing units around the city's 850 existing collection stations.

The stations, introduced between 2018 and 2022 to address residents' concerns about waste storage in alleyways, currently offer both recycling and general waste facilities.

The new housing will smarten their appearance and integrate them more neatly into neighbourhoods, while clear signage will help residents identify which bin to use for which type of waste – a move officials hope will cut down on fly-tipping in communal areas.

The upgrade also supports the council's ongoing rollout of weekly food waste collections, launched last September.

Cllr Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetscene said: ‘Communal bins provide an important service for thousands of households across Liverpool, and these upgrades will make them more durable, easier to use and better integrated into our neighbourhoods.

‘These upgraded communal bin stations will provide a better experience for the people who use them every day, while also helping us expand food waste collections to more households across the city.’
