The leaders of three councils in Lincolnshire have proposed reducing the number of local authorities in the county from 10 to two.
North East Lincolnshire Council leader Philip Jackson, North Lincolnshire Council leader Rob Waltham and Lincolnshire County Council leader Martin Hill have written to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner in response to the Government’s call for local government reorganisation (LRG).
The letter states that LRG would create a ‘more efficient and sustainable model’ of local government for Greater Lincolnshire’s 1.1 million residents, while bringing ‘considerable’ financial savings and protecting services.
The council leaders also requested guidance on elections in 2025 and 2026, and asked for assurance from the deputy PM that Greater Lincolnshire’s current devolution deal would not disadvantage the area.
The letter reads: ‘We would welcome the opportunity to work at pace with you and your officials to advance our shared ambitions at your earliest opportunity and to ensure that Greater Lincolnshire is not disadvantaged because we have already embraced the Mayoral model of devolution.’
