The recession has been cited as the reason why 4.72% less waste was generated in Birmingham in 2009/10.
Birmingham City Council has also revealed its recycling rate went up by 1.56% to 31.97% of all waste collected during the year.Cllr Timothy Huxtable, cabinet member for transportation and regeneration, said: ‘People have been spending less on goods and therefore, it is highly likely that this is a key cause for waste levels dropping.’
