A motion to abandon the mayoral system has been opposed by Leicester councillors.
The proposal to ditch the directly-elected mayor position, occupied by Sir Peter Soulsby, was put forward by Green and Conservative party members at a council meeting last Thursday.
The motion suggested that due to the ‘continued and serious failings’ of key council services, the move would help ‘restore public trust’.
While Green and Conservative councillors told the meeting that the ‘experiment’ of the mayoral system had ‘failed’, the motion was rejected by a majority of Labour councillors, according to the BBC.
Mr Soulsby claimed that the service disruptions mentioned were unrelated to the council’s mayoral system and argued the motion was ‘premature’.
He noted that the system could also be abolished by the Government amid the shift of the local authority’s political boundaries.
