An incoming Labour government’s regeneration plans will fail without radical action to devolve financial decision-making, researchers have warned.

The Centre for Progressive Policy (CPP) think-tank said that if Labour was to win a forthcoming General Election it should take immediate steps to remedy the ‘desperate state of local government finances’.

Senior Labour figures have spoken of wanting to devolve finances to create local ‘engines of growth’ through a Take Back Control Bill.

In its report, the CPP warned that local government finances were so weak after a decade of austerity that stabilising the sector must be an immediate priority.
