The Government is due to launch a Town of Culture programme to honour local heritage.
At the Labour party conference today, culture secretary Lisa Nandy will reportedly announce that the scheme is designed to support local arts and culture, as well as producing jobs and creative opportunities for young people.
The programme aims to feature the heritage of UK towns rather than larger cities, according to The i Paper, enhancing ‘pride in place’ across winning regions.
The requirements of the Town of Culture title winner purportedly involve displaying cultural heritage highlights in the local area for a year.
‘Towns are the beating heart of Britain, full of talent, creativity and pride’, Nandy will say.
‘This is about backing the people who make our towns great, celebrating the places we’re proud to call home, and putting culture at the heart of our national renewal.’
