A High Court judge has ruled in favour of a campaigner who took legal action against Lambeth Council to stop it allowing the use of a local park for festivals.
Rebekah Shaman, a member of Protect Brockwell Park, argued that the council was wrong to certify the planned use of Brockwell Park as lawful.
Under permitted development rules, a temporary change of use in the park land is allowed for a total of 28 days each year.
Protect Brockwell Park, whose supporters include the Oscar-winning actor Sir Mark Rylance, argued that Brockwell Live festivals exceed the 28-day limit and ‘inflict ecological damage, disrupt the peace, and disturb wildlife.’
In what has been described as the Battle for Brockwell, the judge reportedly ruled that the local authority’s decision to grant the certificate to the festival organisers was ‘irrational’.
A statement from Protect Brockwell Park said: ‘This is a big win for local residents and campaigners – and a clear message to the council: start listening.’
