Jobs boost for 13 councils

Thirteen cities have been given extra powers by the Government to tackle unemployment. In a move which backs the Government’s rhetoric to devolve more powers down to cities and regions, they will target those most in need to get them off benefits and into jobs. A grant of £5m will get the plans off the ground and extra cash will be given to those meeting their targets. The councils, which include Birmingham, Liverpool and Nottingham City Councils, will work together with government agencies, businesses and the voluntary sector to develop plans for approval by the Department for Work and Pensions in the autumn.
