Highways: City roads hit the skids

Birmingham City Council has approved a £4M programme to repair damage to its roads caused by the winter’s freezing weather.
A road inspection since the cold spell revealed an ‘alarming’ amount of surface damage, leading to many roads and footways reaching critical condition, said Cllr Len Gregory, cabinet member for transport.
‘Some have lost up to 30% of their surfacing material in just a few weeks, presenting not only potholes, but skidding hazards from loose materials. The £4M additional funds will enable us to complete this work quickly and without prejudice to our on going annual road maintenance programme,’ he added.
