Healey launches regeneration report

Local Government minister John Healey has launched a report on the regeneration successes in Britain’s eight ‘core cities’.

Speaking at the Core Cities Summit in Nottingham highlighted the importance of Britain’s major cities to the UK economy.

Mr Healey said the report, COMPETE - Messages for Competitive European Cities, was a reminder of the competitive challenges ahead.

He added: ‘Alongside new financial freedoms we are putting in place we must also ensure our cities are able to build relationships with businesses, reach out beyond administrative boundaries and deliver not just services but improved opportunities to people though jobs, skills, investment, housing and transport.’

The report praises Sheffield City Council’s regeneration after the economic decline of the 1970s and 1980s.

Council leader, Jan Wilson said: ‘I'm delighted Sheffield's being used as an excellent example of regeneration. We've worked extremely hard to focus on delivering jobs, investment and enterprise, and importantly, what makes for 'good quality of life' for its citizens.’

Britian’s eight core cities are: Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
