Derbyshire County Council’s gritting team was unable to access a road near a popular hiking spot at the weekend because of visitors’ parking.

The local authority took to X on Saturday to explain it was facing issues caused by ‘around 200 cars’ parked on both sides of the road at Rushup Edge and Mam Nick near Edale.

The post said: ‘Please move your car if you are in the area. If we can't get through neither would a bus or fire engine. Thanks.’

In a statement, the council added: ‘We realise that people want to enjoy the Peak District, but this level of parking is making the gritters’ job very difficult.’

It came after a week of disruption caused by freezing temperatures and snowfall in north Derbyshire, with several roads closed across the region.
