The Government has backed Greater Manchester’s decision not to implement a clean air zone (CAZ) and instead to take an ‘investment-led approach’ to pollution.
The region’s air pollution will be tackled with an £86m scheme which will introduce 117 new lower and zero-emission buses, traffic management measures, and cleaner taxis.
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said he was grateful for the ‘vote of confidence’ in the ‘investment-led approach to cleaning up our air.’
The investment package also includes up to £21.9m for administration and local leaders have been told they can cancel contracts relating to the CAZ, such as signs and cameras.
Air Quality Minister Emma Hardy commented: ‘Local authorities know their communities well and so they need to develop plans that are most effective for their local area, and I am pleased that Greater Manchester has found a clear way to reduce emissions without the need to charge motorists.’
