Communities secretary Michael Gove today warned of an ‘explosion in antisemitism’ since the outbreak of the latest round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Hamas’ attack against Israel on 7 October and the State of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza in response has led to an increase in antisemitic incidents in the UK.

According to the Community Security Trust, there were over 4,100 recorded incidents of antisemitism in 2023 – an increase of 147% on the previous year. Nearly 2,700 of these incidents occurred after October 7th.

Mr Gove said the safety of the Jewish community in the UK is the ‘canary in the mine’ for the health of the whole political system.

‘Growing antisemitism is a fever which weakens the whole body politic. It is a mark of a society turning to darkness and in on itself.’
