Levelling up secretary Michael Gove has stepped down ahead of the next election after nearly two decades as an MP.

Mr Gove, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and MP for Surrey Heath, said it was time for a ‘new generation’ to lead the party.

In a statement on Friday, he said this Government had ‘delivered the biggest transfer of powers from Westminster to local people in England for more than a century.’

Mr Gove also added he was pleased to be able to introduce ‘the most wide-ranging reforms to leasehold, social housing, and supported housing in a generation.’

Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark, a former levelling up minister, also announced on Friday he would not stand for re-election.
